Sewer line repair

Sewer repair and sewer pipe repair in Indianapolis

Most Indianapolis laterals don't fail all at once. They fail at one joint under the front walk, or at the foundation wall, or where a silver maple root finally broke through. A spot repair fixes that section for $1,500–$4,000 and leaves the rest of a serviceable pipe alone.

What a spot repair is

A sewer lateral is 40 to 100 feet of pipe. When the camera finds one collapsed clay joint at 32 feet and the rest of the run holding its shape, replacing the whole thing is throwing money at pipe that is doing its job. In a spot repair the contractor locates the bad section from the camera and the sonde, digs a pit over it, cuts out the damaged length, and couples in new SDR-35 PVC with shielded stainless couplings on each end. Then the pit is backfilled in lifts, the surface is restored, and the line should be scoped again.

Sewer pipe repair Indianapolis homeowners actually need is usually one of these:

A collapsed or offset clay joint. The mortar has washed out and one section has dropped below the next, catching paper and catching the camera. This is a common failure in Meridian-Kessler, Butler-Tarkington and Irvington, and there is a whole post on it: clay pipe joints and offset joints.

A root intrusion that broke the pipe. Roots come in at a joint, and by the time they have blocked the line twice the joint is cracked. Jetting clears the roots; the repair closes the door. Root clogs in Indianapolis peak in late summer; the root post explains why the city's maples and oaks are so good at this.

A crushed run of Orangeburg. Usually under a driveway or the front walk, where fifty years of load flattened it. If it is one short section it gets cut out; if the camera shows blistering the whole way, that is a replacement, and a good contractor will say so.

A broken connection at the foundation wall. Old houses settle, the cast iron stub through the wall stays put, and the clay beyond it shears. A short excavation against the foundation, a flexible coupling, and it is done. It is the kind of sewer drain repair that sounds bigger than it is.

A bad section at the main tap. The connection to the Citizens main is the deepest part of the run and the most likely to have been botched in 1955. That repair happens in the right-of-way, needs the permit and the inspection, and is priced accordingly.

When repair is the wrong call

If the camera finds three or more bad spots, if the pipe is Orangeburg with blisters along its length, or if there is a belly that holds water for more than a few feet, a spot repair is the wrong buy — you would pay again next year. The trenchless page and the replacement page cover the alternatives, and the cost page puts the numbers side by side.

A collapse quoted as a spot job should still come with a full-length camera run. A pipe that collapsed in one place usually has the same disease everywhere else.

Depth and frost

Laterals in Marion County are usually four to six feet deep at the house and eight to twelve at a street main. Frost gets three to four feet down in a hard winter, so the pipe itself rarely freezes, but the ground above it does, and a January spot repair means breaking frost with the excavator before the real digging starts. Winter repairs are possible — a sewer doesn't wait — but if the problem can hold until the ground is soft, the dig is cheaper and the lawn recovers faster. The fall checklist is what to do while it is still soft.

What a spot-repair quote should include

  • The camera inspection (ask whether it's credited against the repair)
  • Indiana 811 locate before digging
  • The permit and the inspection where the repair is in the right-of-way or at the tap — ask Citizens Energy Group what it requires for work on your lateral
  • Excavation, the new pipe and couplings, and backfill compacted in lifts
  • Surface restoration to lawn, or the cut concrete or asphalt priced as its own line
  • A post-repair camera run and the video file — ask for both in writing

Sewer lateral repair Indianapolis-wide is priced by depth, by surface and by access, not by the hour. A four-foot dig in a lawn is at the low end. An eight-foot dig at the curb under a concrete apron is at the top. Any Indianapolis sewer repair quote should show the line items so you can see where the money goes.

How to compare two spot-repair quotes

Put the quotes side by side and check the same five things on each:

  1. The footage and depth of the dig. Both quotes should name the same spot from the camera run. If one says 32 feet and the other says 45, ask both to show you the video at that point.
  2. How much pipe comes out. A two-foot section and a ten-foot section are different jobs at different prices.
  3. The couplings. Shielded stainless couplings on each end are the norm. A plain rubber sleeve with hose clamps and no shield is a cheaper part.
  4. Restoration. Lawn seed, or cut concrete replaced? It should be a line on the quote, not a spoken promise.
  5. The after video. Ask whether a second camera run is included once the pit is closed.

A low quote that leaves out restoration or the permit isn't cheaper. It moves those costs to later.

Common mistakes with a broken lateral

  • Paying for a third snaking of the same clog instead of a camera run.
  • Approving a dig before the spot is painted on the lawn.
  • Fixing one joint without scoping the rest of the run, then finding the next bad joint a year later.
  • Pouring root killer into a pipe that is already cracked. It does nothing for the crack.
  • Assuming the city will pay. In most of Indianapolis the lateral belongs to the owner, often all the way to the main. The lateral ownership post explains where your part ends.

Where these repairs are common

The 1920s–40s blocks along College, Central and Meridian north of 38th; Irvington and the streets around Ellenberger Park; Garfield Park and Bates-Hendricks on the south side; the postwar ranches in Eagledale, Devington and Warren Park; and the older parts of Greenwood and Carmel.

Questions plumbers get asked

How does a contractor know where to dig?

The camera head carries a transmitter. The contractor runs the camera to the break, then walks the lawn with a locator that reads the signal and gives the spot and the depth to within a few inches. Ask for it to be painted on the grass before you approve anything. Nobody should be digging exploratory holes in your yard in 2026.

How long does a spot repair take?

Usually one working day: locate and mark in the morning, dig, cut and couple by early afternoon, then backfill and a second camera run if you ask for one. Repairs at the main tap in the street can take two days because the pavement cut and the inspection are scheduled separately.

Can a sewer line be repaired in winter?

Yes. Frost reaches three to four feet in a bad Indianapolis winter, so the excavator has to break through it before the dig starts, which adds time and a little cost. The pipe itself is deeper than the frost and repairs the same way. A sewer that is backing up in January does not get to wait for April.

How do I know if I just need the line cleared?

Ask for the camera run before any repair price. Often the camera shows roots or grease in a pipe that is structurally fine — a jetting job at a few hundred dollars, not a dig. If the video shows the pipe round and the joints tight once it is clean, clearing it is the honest answer.

Is a spot repair a permanent fix?

For that section, yes. New PVC and good couplings should outlast the house. It does nothing for the joints on either side, though. If the camera shows the rest of the clay tight and round, one repair can be the whole answer. If it shows the same wear everywhere, price lining too.
